What is Autism?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorders, are a range of developmental disabilities that typically present in early childhood. The spectrum of autism disorders can range from social awkwardness to complete non-verbal behavior. While disabilities of autism vary from patient to patient, the behaviors characterized by the spectrum of disorders generally affect social skills, the ability to communicate, sensory and motor skills.

There is no known cause for autism and according to the CDC's 2016 Autism Prevalence report, has risen to every 1 in 68 births in the United States.

Early signs of autism

  • Limited or no eye contact
  • Limited or no communication
  • Delays with verbal communication
  • Fixation on certain objects or parts of an object
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Lack of understanding of other peoples feelings
  • Changes in routine are upsetting
  • Unusual reactions to senses
